Eight Great Reasons to Write a Letter

Posted by Michelle Lancaster on

I don't know anyone who doesn't love receiving a piece of snail mail! There's something really special about a seeing an exciting handwritten envelope on your doormat. Maybe it's decorated. Maybe it has fun and colourful stamps attached. And then there's the thought that someone has taken the time to sit down and write something, just for you. Sunshine through your letterbox!

Wouldn't it be great to send (and receive!) a few more letters? But what to write? Hmm. Well, fear not - I've put together a few ideas that should help you. (And the best bit is, you might get some lovely mail back in return!)

Eight Great Reasons to Write a Letter

1. Letters don't have to be long! Just a little note is enough to make someone smile. How about sending a cheery 'hello', or even just a few lines about your day? (Ooo - our fun notecards are perfect for this - and they come with cute stickers to decorate the envelope too...)

(pssst! There's a special offer at the end of this post!)

2. Include something fun or interesting with your note - how about a cutting from a magazine or newspaper, or a puzzle or crossword? Or maybe a great recipe?

3. Do you have a friend who has been through a bit of a rough time lately? Send them a paper 'hug'. It will mean a lot to know that you care, and that you're thinking about them.

4. Write a letter with fun questions and tick boxes, and ask the recipient to fill it out and return it. You never know what you might find out!

5. Get your creative mojo on and write a note just so you can decorate the envelope! Did you know that writing letters can spark creativity? Writing allows us to slow down, concentrate on the moment, and connect with what we are doing. (And colouring in is really therapeutic y'know.) It's alllll kinds of good. So what are you waiting for? Get your pencils out!

6. Write to a child that you know. They don’t often get mail, and will be so excited to get a letter addressed to them! Ask them to write back, too.

7. Hooray! Go you! Well done! I can't believe you did it! Woop! .... Send congratulations to someone - for big things like completing a marathon - wow - right down to the little stuff, like finally finishing that thing they've been putting off. Phew!  Whatever their achievement, they deserve a little pat on the back, don't they?!

8. Write an impromptu note to invite a friend for tea and cake (or something stronger!). These are definitely the kinds of letters I like to receive ;)
